Ethel Bernice Hopkins - Obituary November 30, 1932 - January 3, 2023
She was a strong single mother that worked hard to take care of her children. She taught them God is always able, prayer changes things, and doing the right thing will follow you. Bernice was the last surviving member of her family. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandmother Bessie A. Rucker; her four brothers and their spouses; Frank O. Thompson (wife Catherine) of New Haven, Connecticut, Floyd E. Hopkins of Alderson, Robert Alondo Hopkins (wife Hattie Catherine) of Alderson, John “Pete” Hopkins of Alderson and two sisters, Peggy Ann Hopkins and Sister Margaret Cosby (husband Floyd) all of Alderson and her oldest son, William Tyrone Hopkins. Bernice leaves to cherish precious memories of her daughters Deborah Hopkins Tanner Byrd of Portsmouth, Ohio; MaryBeth and her husband William “Bill” Hopkins of Alderson, West Virginia; Ethel and husband Russell Davidson of Alpharetta, Georgia; son Hugh A. “Buck” Leonard of Alderson, West Virginia; grandchildren Minister Thomas Tanner, Jr. of Springfield, Ohio; Carrie Tanner of Portsmouth, Ohio; Ebony Hopkins of Alderson, West Virginia; Quwohn Hopkins of Seattle, Washington; Adrianne Davidson of Sandy Springs, Georgia; Ashlee and husband Victor Ham of Atlanta, Georgia, Lisette and husband Tehquin Tanner of Atlanta Georgia; and three great-grandsons Cavion and Ian Tanner of Portsmouth, Ohio; Javon Hopkins (Morgan) of Lewisburg, West Virginia; one great-granddaughter Naomi Tanner of Atlanta, Georgia; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends. The funeral will be held at 12:00 pm on January 7, 2023 at Lantz Funeral Home, 101 Davis Street, Alderson, West Virginia. Burial will follow at Pine Ridge Cemetery, Alderson, West Virginia. Ethel Bernice Hopkins, 90, of Alderson, West Virginia passed away on January 3, 2023. Bernice was born on November 30, 1932 in Alderson, West Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Estil and Lina May Jackson Hopkins. She attended the segregated South Alderson School and attended Bolling High School in Lewisburg, West Virginia. Ms. Hopkins attended the Greater Emmanuel Holiness Church. She began her work experiences as an employee of the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulphur Springs. She went on to live in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Most of her employment was as a domestic worker serving in the finest homes in Alderson and other parts of Greenbrier and Monroe counties. She nursed countless ill family members, neighbors, and elderly employers.
