Only Yesterday In Alderson - Page2 Tom Dixon (Click on photos for larger view)
Looking   west   about   1905   we   see   the   freight   station   cluttered   with equipment,   the   passenger   station   just   beyond   with   folks   waiting for   the   train   approaching   in   the   distance,   and   baggage   trucks piled   high.   Beyond   the   station   area   a   lumber   yard   bustles.   In these   days   no   less   than   14   trains   a   day   called   at   Alderson, including   locals   for   Hinton   and   Clifton   Forge   and   fast   flyers   for   N. Y. and Cincinnati. Photo by J. W. McClung.
Operators   J.   Abe   Bright,   J.   G   Houchins   (on   roof),   and   O.   D. Massey   (in   door)   pose   with   the   C&O   Telegraph   cabin   in   1895 when   it   was   still   located   at   the   Monroe   Street   Crossing.   Photo from Kitty Stewart.
These    views    show    Postmaster    George    E.    Bare    and    the Alderson   Post   Office   in   1901   (top)   and   about   1910   (bottom). Mr.   Bare's   customers   in   the   top   picture   are   unidentified,   but he   is   recognized   as   standing   with   C.   M.   Nelson   and   Charlie Stanton   in   the   lower   one.   The   Alderson   Post   Office   was established    February    6,    1872.    Mr.    Bare    was    Postmaster 1901-1914   and   1923-1935.   (Notice   the   manikin   in   the   store to   the   left,   wearing   ladies   apparel.-   Photo   from   Mrs.   D.   M.
