Improving The Community One Project At A Time” PO Box 117 -  Alderson W Va.  24910 Made with Xara © Alderson Main Street 2013 RECYCLING FLOAT PLANNED FOR PARADE A float celebrating the growth of recycling efforts in Alderson this year will be located near the end of the Grand  July 4th Parade. The unit will also collect recyclable items from the crowd as it moves along the parade route.  Some of the students who were involved in the “Go Green Machine” at Alderson Elementary School this year will  be collecting plastic drink bottles, clean paper, and other items that can be recycled. Their artwork from the  Sustainability Week activities will decorate the float. Anna Osborne, teacher at Alderson Elementary, said, “This is  such great art work and we are happy to recycle it as decorations for the float.” Another part of the Green Team’s effort to call attention to all areas of sustainability will be a tandem bicycle unit  ridden by Brian, Kathleen, and Micah DeRouen. In a reprise of their hit appearance from last year, they will add a  colorful exclamation point to the issue.  Alderson’s mascot, Leo the Lion, has agreed to help with the effort to divert recyclable items from the trash stream and will be riding or walking beside the float to encourage everyone to recycle. Leo is extremely popular among  the students who participate in the walking school bus and also shares their enthusiasm for sustainability. Leo,  who doesn’t talk, nodded energetically when asked if he was excited to be in the parade. This is the second year that the Alderson Green Team has been represented in the parade and has helped recycle the trash. In addition to the “mobile recycling unit” there will be stationary cans for recycling at strategic points  along the parade route.  (Click on photo for larger view)
