The model train exhibit which was held during the Sixth
Annual Alderson Christmas Homes Tour on
Sunday, December 7, 2008,
was enjoyed by all who attended. Coordinated by Lee
Skaggs with help from Tammy Smith Skaggs and Lucy Mae
Smith, there were smiles on the faces of all who came to
see the model trains.
Lee Skaggs exhibited his re-creation of an “over the
river and through the woods” town in winter with the
train as its centerpiece. This large “O” scale display
completely fascinated one little boy who attended. Luke
Jones, son of Eugene and Mary Pat Jones of Meadow Creek,
whose head barely reached to the top of the display,
stood for many minutes watching the train go around.
The father and son team of Rick and Zack Burns exhibited
their small “N” scale display. Its miniature size was
new to some visitors who didn’t know model trains came
that small. Rick Burns said, “There is even one size
smaller than this!”
Carrying out the Christmas theme were two small trees
decorated “railroad style”. One had artfully tied
bandanas as ornaments with a railroad engineer’s cap on
the top, and the other was decorated with crossing signs
and train cars, both designed by Tammy Smith Skaggs.
E. Sterling “Tod” Hanger, Jr., Chairman of the Board of
the C&O Historical Society based in Clifton Forge, was
present with information and displays from the Society,
membership information, and Chessie collectibles.
On a snowy day with the sound of real trains in the
background, this exhibit brought cheer to all who
visited it. |
