The second installment for brick
sales (100) bricks is planned for the end of March, 2009.
All sales made from last year to present will be forwarded to the
manufacturer and installed by
July 4th, 2009. This event will only happen if we have a total of
100 brick sales for the year. Current orders are around the 55 to
60 mark therefore we really need another 40+ brick sales in order
to have the next one hundred installed by this July. If you have
not yet purchased a brick, or if you know someone who is thinking
about it but has yet to do so then please encourage them to do so
by sending their check for $50 to Alderson Main Street, P. O. Box
117, Alderson, WV 24910. You may include three lines of text on
the brick with 18 characters per line. If you have questions or
need help you may call me at (304) 839-7178 or email me at
andy6424@aol.com. Bricks may be in memory of a friend, family
member, wedding, birthdate, graduation etc. They will be a
permanent endowment of your interest and support of this beautiful
park.
The benches (7) that
have been sold will be installed in early spring, and the
inscription plaques will be ordered and installed by the 4th.
These benches will line the river side of the park and hopefully
will be used by many of you during your visits to Alderson. It is
our hope to include some additional landscaping this year to
include some permanent shrubs and trees.
The VFW is planning to
install a flag pole at the entrance of the park and provide the
flag to be flown. In addition,
Main Street will purchase and install a second flag pole at the
entrance upon which the newly designed (when completed by Todd
Hanger) town flag will fly. We are also investigating the
possibility of erecting some sort of permanent monument in the
park containing the names of all of the Alderson men and women who
have served in the Armed Forces during any of the wars/conflicts
beginning with WW I. If any of you have seen the entrance to the
old football field and the plaques at the entrance - they are in
disgraceful condition. This is an attempt to install and maintain
a memorial befitting the service of our citizens throughout the
last century and into the 21st century.
Every one of you is an
integral part of the planning process for this park, and it is a
work in progress. We encourage your thoughts and advice
concerning this plot. We believe that every one of can be proud
of the park and look upon it as another part of Alderson History.
Incidentally, during 2008 the first wedding ceremony was performed
at the gazebo, and although I do not have the particulars of the
parties I hope to get the names and report to you at a later
date. I am told that the only disruption to the ceremony was an
errant freight train entering the crossing during the ceremony.
As reported in previous letters to you - trains are a part of our
heritage - and the only rule concerning the use of the park as it
pertains to the trains as follows:
When a train passes the
park during any type of ceremony or other event the participants
are asked to halt the ceremony and collectively waive at the
engineer.
Thank each of you for
your support. |
