A Sensational Play from the Distant Past
 Rick Hughes 09

BEING IN THE OLD ALDERSON GYM REMINDED ME OF THE GREATEST PLAY I EVER SAW OR PARTICIPATED IN. YEARS AGO ON A FREEZING WINTER NIGHT, WE WERE PLAYING AGAINST WHITE SULPHUR IN OUR GYM. ROBERT NAPIER, A SHARP SHOOTING GUARD WAS OUT BEYOND THE CIRCLE FACING TOWARD LEWISBURG. NAPIER FIRED A LONG JUMP SHOT. I WAS ON THE FOUL LINE AND EXPLODED UPWARD, BEFORE THE SHOT REACHED ITS PEAK, I SMASHED IT WITH SUPREME FORCE. NAPIER RAN TOWARD THE BASKET UNAWARE I HAD CLOBBERED THE BALL. I GRABBED THE BALL AND DROVE FEROCIOUSLY  TOWARD OUR  BASKET. AS I LEAPED FORWARD, I COULD HAVE EASILY DUNKED IT.  I SAW TO MY LEFT AL MCLAUGHLIN AND FLIPPED IT TO HIM. AL, SKILLFULLY THREW THE BALL ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE BASKET AND ALLEN GALLOWAY, WITH OVERWHELMING AUTHORITY AND POWER GRABBED THE BALL WITH BOTH HANDS AND  FORCEFULLY, SAVAGELY DUNKED THE BALL. I HAVE WATCHED A LOT OF BASKETBALL IN MY 67 YEARS AND TO ME THAT WAS THE MOST ARTISTIC, BEAUTIFUL PLAY I HAVE EVER SEEN OR PARTICIPATED IN.
