The best history of Alderson is by
Tomas Dixon, Jr. To my knowledge Tom Dixon published two books on
Alderson and these pictures are from "Only Yesterday in Alderson,
West Virginia", published in 1977. I think these pictures are also
in his book, "The Rise and Fall of Alderson, West Virginia". The
latter publication is not in print at the moment, which is a shame.
Maybe some day this book will become available again. For the moment
we have these pictures, with some commentary. I wish to thank Tom
for his permission to reprint the photos in The Aldersonian. I also
thank Bobby Black for his efforts in securing the pictures. |

A picture of Main
Street,1907, taken by J. W. McClung. The First
National Bank is on the corner. On the second floor, a dry goods
store was operated by E. I. Bare. Only two doors down was the
Greenbrier National Bank. Alderson must have had a booming
economy to have two banks located so close together. |
