Virgil Roy Mccutcheon - Obituary

July 12, 1935 - May 13, 2020

Virgil Roy McCutcheon, age 84, of Alderson, W.Va., passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 at the Doug and Lucy Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, W.Va., following a short illness.

Born July 12, 1935 in Alderson, W.Va., he was the son of the late James Benjamin and Nora Edith Adkins McCutcheon. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 65 years, whom he married on February 16, 1954, Alice Virginia McMillion McCutcheon on December 9, 2019; his son, Kenneth Louis "Kenny" McCutcheon on July 25, 2018; three brothers; and four sisters.

Mr. McCutcheon retired as a Technical Sergeant from the United States Air Force after 21 years of service to our Country and was a veteran of the Vietnam Era and was awarded The Air Force Commendation Medal. Sergeant McCutcheon distinguished himself by meritorious service as squadron On-The-Job-Training Monitor Supervisor, Training Control, 1840th Consolidated Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Missouri.

His technical expertise and diligence to duty were largely responsible for the prompt upgrading in skill level of numerous junior airmen. The distinctive accomplishments of Sergeant McCutcheon reflect credit upon himself and the United States Air Force. Following his career with the United States Air Force, Mr. McCutcheon worked and retired from the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine in Lewisburg, W.Va. He was a graduate of Alderson High School, Alderson, W.Va. and attended the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, where he was always willing to lend a helping hand. He was a member of Tri County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson, W.Va. Mr. McCutcheon enjoyed wood working and was an excellent furniture maker. He also loved to travel and enjoyed NASCAR, but above all he loved his family, friends, and neighbors.

Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Nancy McCutcheon of Lee’s Summit, Mo.; three grandchildren, Tiffany Reynolds of Raymore, Mo., Jay McCutcheon of Columbia, Mo., and Shea Harrel and her husband, Brett, of Blue Springs, Mo.; five great-grandchildren, Caleb, Jacob, Remy, Brogan, and Evan; and several nieces and nephews.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, CDC guidelines will be observed. Graveside services and burial will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020 at 1:00 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in Alderson, W.Va. with the Rev. Dr. Richard Lohmeyer officiating and full military funeral honors conducted by the United States Air Force. Family and friends may call on Saturday, May 16, 2020 from12:00 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. at the Lobban Funeral Home in Alderson, W.Va.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
