Hugh Harris - Obituary

April 28, 1926 - November 8, 2018

G. Hugh Harris, age 92, of Alderson, W.Va., passed away peacefully with his family by his side on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at the Peyton Hospice House in Lewisburg, W.Va.

Born April 28, 1926 at Clayton, W.Va., he was the son of the late James Arnold and Glenna Lacy Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Mae Moten Harris; two sons, James Earl and Larry Joe; one (adopted) daughter, Melinda Boggess Bowden; one grandson, Mike Allen; one great-grandson, Corbin Carter; a brother, Edwin Ray Harris; and a sister, Iona Harris Ryan.

Hugh retired as a rural mail carrier with the US Postal Service after 32 years of service.

He was the owner of Harris Feed and Grocer, the owner of Hugh Harris Insurance Agency, a member of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and EMS, a member of the Alderson Lions Club and a member of the Alderson 4th of July Committee.

Hugh was a member of the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, a 50 year member of the Alderson Masonic Lodge #70 AF&AM where he was a Past Master and served as secretary for 45 years, a member of the Ronceverte Chapter #21 RAM, Greenbrier Commandery #15 Knights Temple and Beni Kedem Shrine. He was a World War II veteran survivor of the USS Bunker Hill Bombing, a 72-year member of American Legion Post #26 and Tri County Memorial VFW Post 6723, Alderson. She served numerous terms on the Alderson City Council and served as Mayor for the Town of Alderson. He was appointed by Governor Arch Moore and served on the first Board of Directors for the WVSOM.

Hugh is survived by his children, Garland Hugh Harris (Sharon), Jerry Harris (Julia), and Sheila Harris of Alderson and David Harris (Barbara) of Morgantown; nine grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; and a brother-in-law, Earl Ray Moten (Wanda) of Peterstown.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 12, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, W.Va. with the Reverend Roger Adams Officiating. Burial will follow at the Old Greenbrier Memorial Cemetery in Alderson, W.Va., with military funeral honors and Masonic graveside rights conducted by Alderson Masonic Lodge #70 AF&AM. Friends may call Sunday, November 11, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Old Greenbrier Baptist Church in Alderson, and one hour prior to services at the Church on Monday.

Serving as pallbearers will be the members of Alderson Masonic Lodge #70 AF&AM. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Alderson Volunteer Fire Department and EMS.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Peyton Hospice House, 1265 Maplewood Ave., Lewisburg, WV 24901.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to three very special people who provided medical care to Hugh. Dr. Marilyn Glaser of Alderson, WV; Dr. John Lobban of Morgantown, WV; and Dr. Heather Ratliff of Lewisburg, WV. We would also like to thank the Peyton Hospice House of Lewisburg, WV for their compassionate care.
