ALDERSON — Oretha Vass
Shawver, 97, of Alderson, died Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2005, at The
Brier Rehabilitation And Nursing Center, Ronceverte, following a
short illness.
Born Dec. 2, 1907, at Lindside, she was the daughter of the late
George and Mary Todd “Molly” Smith Vass.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her
husband, Curtis Allen Shawver; a sister, Lucille Sutton; and a
niece, Norma June Webb.
Mrs. Shawver was a retired school teacher, having taught school in
Monroe and Greenbrier counties for 32 years. She attended Alderson
Baptist Academy and Junior College and graduated from Concord
College with a teaching certificate. Mrs. Shawver had been a
member of Old Greenbrier Baptist Church, Alderson, for the past 76
years, having joined the church in 1929. She was a member of the
Homemaker’s Sunday School Class and loved church and Sunday
school. Mrs. Shawver was very active in social and civic
organizations in the community of Alderson and will always be
remembered for her generosity and kindness to others.
Survivors include a special great-niece, Mary Morris and her
husband, Jeff, of White Sulphur Springs; great-great-nieces, Holly
Morris of White Sulphur Springs and Tracy White and her husband,
Tony, of Roanoke, Va.; a great-great-great-nephew, Logen Withrow
of Roanoke; special friend, Patty Hill of Frankford; and several
other nieces and nephews.
Service will be 2 p.m. Friday at Old Greenbrier Baptist Church,
Alderson, with the Rev. Mark Stauffer officiating. Burial will
follow in Alderson Cemetery.
Friends may call noon to 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
Friends will serve as pallbearers.
