The "New" Alderson Hotel

Barry Worrell - April 1, 2020

Being  voluntarily shut in can conger up some weird ideas. You get tired of TV, or just sitting around. You really get tired of tackling some of those got-to fix-it projects, especially if you get physically tired from being old. But, from what ever the reasons, the thoughts emanating from an idle brain keeps coming.

I've been thinking about this idea for a while, even before the virus issue, and I present it to you for your thoughts and comments. Besides, what else do you have to do??

What about a new hotel in Alderson? Could be a good idea. Basing it on the premise, "If You Build It, They Will Come", a new hotel would be a nice addition to the city.

In my vision, the hotel would look just like the old hotel that sat on the river bank. Although it would look like a period hotel, it would have both Victorian and moderns rooms. Got to give folks a choice, right? It would have more rooms than the original. It would have a first class restaurant on the ground floor with a real chef, with room to have live music and even dancing.  Physical size would be determined by where it would be built. Hmmm.... where would it be built??

On the river bank would a great view just like the original, but not practical because of possible floods, the railroad, and no room. I frequently go to Google Earth and look at Alderson to see the names of street and where they are. As I recall, streets signs were not put up until the 60s, (please correct me if I'm wrong on that point) and growing up in Alderson, a street sign never crossed my mind. As I was saying, Google Earth allows me to look at all the property of Alderson form above.

The logical place would be the property where the old Baptist Junior College building is now. I've often thought about what would be more practical, restore the building, or tare it down. In my vision tarring it down for the new hotel would be more practical, in spite of loosing the old  historic building. It seems to be just sitting there, deteriorating day by day.

I've noticed a lot of long rectangular buildings on the south side of the building which look like storage containers. All of that would have to go and the grounds cleaned up. The new hotel need parking and landscaping suitable for the building.

I've left out a lot of details, as you might be thinking right now, but I can't do it all and this a little bit of something to get our minds off COVID 19. Besides, it's also April Fools Day.

You've read my idea, so it's time for you to respond to mine or even present your own. What else do you have to do??
